David Guterson

David Guterson gives us an insight into the conflicts between the Americans and Japanese in San Piedro in his novel.
We see how the love life of Ishmael changed and we could notice similarities and differences during his growing up.
Ishmael grew up with the japanese girl, Hatsue and as a kid they were just good friends, but by the time they fell in love. Both Ishmael and Hatsue knew that it was very difficult to have a relationship in this way, but Ishmael never gave up hope. Hatsue´s mother always wanted the best for her daughter and she insisted on that Hatsue have a japanese boyfriend. So they weren´t friends in public, because of their fear and the gap between the Americans and Japanese sides and this situation didn´t change when Ishmael got older. Ishmael always met Hatsue in the wood under a cedar and there he kissed her the first time. When they got older Ishmael wanted to marry Hatsue, because he really was determined to keep the feelings for her forever but in contrast to Ishmael, Hatsue knew that it wasn`t possible.
She left Ishmael and after some time she married a japanese man, named Kabuo. By the time Ishmael began to hate Hatsue and he recognize that she didn´t want him any more, but on the other hand Hatsue only married Kabuo to get over Ishmael and to put him out of her life. After a long time he met Hatsue in a courtroom, because her husband was a defendant of a murder. Ishmael noted that Kabuo didn´t was a murderer and that the man died just because of an accident. At the first time Ishmael didn´t say anything, but he knew the truth. He thought that Kabuo got arrested and that it might would give a chance that Hatsue turned back to Ishmael.
Nevertheless he told it to the judge and Kabuo got free. Ishmael just wanted the best for Hatsue and that she felt happy, although she didn´t come back to him, but afterwards he had a good feeling.

Task 1:

Dear Magdalena,
Yesterday I was in an art exhibition with my family. There we saw a painting that really fascinated me. The name of the picture is “The Problem we all live with”. In the center of the picture you can see a young black girl, who wears a white dress and white shoes. In front of her there walk two policemen, which call Deputy US Marshall and behind her there walk two more policemen. In the background of this painting you can see a wall with tomato spatter on it.
I think that the artist wants to express that a lot of people of another culture and who have another skin colour or when people just live differently to us have a very difficult life, because they can´t integrate very well. In every part of the world there are racists who treat such people very horrible. So this picture shows me that a foreigner needs a lot of protection.
I am totally against racists, because I think that everybody should accept these people how they are, it´s horrible to see how these racists treat them.
I thought about this picture when I went home yesterday morning and asked me the question what the artist really wanted to express with.
What do you think about when you hear such things ?
I hope you have a good time in England !
Please write back ...
Yours Marina

Task 2:

In my opinion this photo taken from the internet isn`t art, because I think that everybody can take a photo in this way. Although it might be that this photo is art for many people, for me this photo hasn´t any expression and I don´t know what the picture will show us. Art is when you create something and not just only takes a photo.
When someone creates a picture you can see how it is made and what the artist want to express. You see how he feels and thinks in this picture.
Apart from this, I think it´s a beautiful photo, but in my opinion it would be better for a postcard or such things, but not for an exhibition.
By the way everybody has another opinion about what art is or is not so there will always be a discussion about this.

Lιƒє αƒтєя dєaтн

A lot of people think about life after death, but nobody has any idea what really happens and it is also impossible to find out.
I think that death is not the end and our life will go on. Some people think that it will be nothing afterwards. But I totally disagree with this statement. In my opinion everybody raise up to heaven and than we will get reborn, but we remain our person, I mean that we remain our identity with the same human knowledge and with the same characteristics and personality traits.
I am not scared to die and there is nothing to be afraid of, because I think that we can start our afterlife new and we will know a lot of things better than in this life.

Lєттєя тσ тнє єdiтσя

Dear editor,

I read the article about “Giuliani forced into climbdown“ in the yesterday´s newspaper. I didn´t understand the row between Mayor Giuliani and the Brooklyn museum about Ofili´s Virgin Mary. Giuliani was against this art exhibition and I totally disagree with him. The painting distinguish from the others, because it´s a kind of “shock art” and in my opinion the people also want to see other kinds of art. I think that the picture is very interesting. You see that art can express the feelings and it also says something about human passions. For me, “shock art” is something special because it´s a different kind of art and you can´t see it everyday. Artists shows you another kind of art and how they express for example their dirty thoughts or such things. Finally I want to say that “shock art” shouldn´t be forbid and I´m happy that the museum won this battle.

Yours,
Marina Klien

It was spring in Lowood. Jane and I were orphans and we lived together in the same orphanage. Life at Lowood briefly seems happier, but we couldn´t stand the fever who had attacked the crowded schoolroom and who turned the orphanage into a hospital. Most of the girls were very weak and so they caught the disease easily. In this Thursday afternoon Jane and I decided to go for a walk. It was the first time that we could go for a walk since a few months. We learnt to take pleasure in fine scenery, in the hills that enclosed our wooded valley. Jane was my closest girlfriend and I could talk with her about everything and of course, what happened to us in the past. We talked about Helen, who lived with us in the orphanage and who was also a very good girlfriend. Helen got very ill and after some time we got to know that she might will die. Nobody was allowed to go and speak to her and I was so sad, because I didn´t want to leave her. I couldn´t sleep all the nights until I had spoken to her. In Lowood we always had to keep strict rules, an everyone was afraid of Mr. Brocklehurst, the cruel master of the Lowood school, but Jane and I wanted to say goodbye to Helen forever. So Jane woke me up that night and we walked quietly trough the building in search of Miss Temple´s room. It was at the other end of the house, but Jane knew our way. We passed quickly by the room of the nurse, who was sitting up all night, but in this night she was sitting in a chair asleep. Jane and I went into Miss Temple´s room and we saw Helen lying on the bed. She had a very calm and pale face. She looked very bad and I really tried to keep back my tears, it was so horrible to see my girlfriend in this condition. Helen promised that she felt little pain and was happy to be leaving the world´s suffering behind and we knew that Helen will die this night. Suddenly we saw a shadow in the room of Miss Temple, it was so strange, because Jane, Helen and I weren´t afraid of it. We all had a good feeling and we could recognize that the shadow looked like a woman. The shadow get closer to Helen and touched her hand. Then Helen´s condition got better and better and she didn´t feel weak any more. It was unbelievable what happened that night, I thought I was part of a dream, but it was true. After some time Helen smelled the perfume of her mother and we all were sure that Helen´s death mother was here.

London (mr). Yesterday afternoon the ten years old Oliver Twist was taken to court by Mr. Fang for pickpocketing and stealing a kerchief from Mr. Brownlow. After that Oliver got released, but the bookseller Mr. Bookworm testified the boy´s innocence. The ten years old boy was stopped by a crowd and then taken to court by two policemen. Oliver wasn´t involved in this pickpocket, but the magistarate Mr. Fang didn´t belive him as all pickpockets say the same. Then a discussion between Mr. Brownlow, the victim of the crime and the magistrate took place, because Mr. Brownlow took pity on the boy. Oliver suddenly collapsed for thirst. The bookseller Mr. Bookworm appeared before the magistrate and gave evidence to this crime. Mr. Bookworm witnessed two other boys who stole the kerchief and Oliver Twist only watched their pickpocket. In the end Oliver Twist was released.

The magistrate told reporters that he has to be strict with those boys, because pickpocketing in this town isn´t a rarity and he has also to be strict only in the interest of public safety, but he is glad that Mr. Bookworm said the truth and that the magistrate didn´t punished Oliver.

Mr. Bookworm told a reporter that everyone could see that Oliver wasn´t a pickpocket, but a poor lost soul. He added that he put this orphaned boy up until he had recovered.

London is known as the town with a lot of crime and pickpocketing. Day after day the crimes increase.

Victorian time

An interview with Josephine Lane, a well- known historian.

Good morning, Josephine, I´m Belinda Jones and I´m reporting for “BBC NEWS”. I would really like to ask you a few questions about the Victorian time, is that possible?
J: Yeah sure !
B: Well, Josephine, you have already said to me that you know everything about the Victorian time. The people are very interested in the question how the life of the children in this time looked like. So let me begin by asking you to tell me about the children´s life. Did they go to school or did they had to work ? Please explain us a little bit.
J: Sure, okay , poor children in Victorian time as young as five worked for a living. The children were made to work long hours with very little pay. It was very hard for them, because many of the jobs they did were unpleasant, dirrty and dangerous. Many children fell ill or had bad accidents, which left them with injuries. Some worked in coal mines pushing trucks of coal to the surface. They had to work in dark with only the light of a candle to help them see. Other children worked in factories. Children in the country also worked. For example, they had to climb up narrow chimneys in big houses to clean them. This job was very dangerous and dirrty and sometimes the hours were long and often the weather was wet and cold.
B: Oh, how horrible ! And they didn´t go to school ?
J: Only a few children attended school at the beginning of Queen Victoria´s reign. Most poor children worked, because of the money. If they went to school, their families would lose this money. But in 1870 a new law was passed which said there had to be a school in every town and village, so all children had to attend school. The schools were very strict. Pupils were hit with a cane or ruler if they didn´t listen to the teacher or they were punished for making inkplots on the paper.
B:This sounds very hard. Were boys and girls together taught in one class ?
J: For some lessons boys and girls were taught seperately. They had different subjects. Boys learned Woodwork, Maths, Technical drawing and girls things like needlework and housework. In Victorian time boys were taught to be more important than girls.
B: This is very unfair. Now to my next question. Did the children had toys to play with ? How did they spent their freetime ?
J: Children often played in the street with toys, which they had make themselves. They shared toys like hoops, marbles and skipping ropes, with friends in the same street, or in the school playground. They made footballs from old rags, and bats from pieces of wood. Rich children had expensive toys like rocking horses, toy trains, dolls and dolls houses. And at weekends, families often went in the park to hear a band play.
B: Well, so the last question to you. When did the Victorian time started and ended? Which changes took place ?
J: Queen Victoria´s reign started 1837 and ended 1901. It was a period of intensive industrialisation, urbanisation ans social change. Women played a central role in all this. The ideal of femininity was the idea of a “woman`s mission”, which was that of playing a model mother, wife and daugther. Women were also seen as moral and spiritual guardians. The Victorian age was not one, not single, simple,or unfied, only in part because Victoria`s reign lasted so long that comprised several periods. Above all, it was an age of paradox and power.
B: Josephine, thank you very much for the interesting interview. You gave us a lot of informations about the Victorian time . I wish you a nice day !
J: Thank you too, Belinda ! Bye, bye !
