It was spring in Lowood. Jane and I were orphans and we lived together in the same orphanage. Life at Lowood briefly seems happier, but we couldn´t stand the fever who had attacked the crowded schoolroom and who turned the orphanage into a hospital. Most of the girls were very weak and so they caught the disease easily. In this Thursday afternoon Jane and I decided to go for a walk. It was the first time that we could go for a walk since a few months. We learnt to take pleasure in fine scenery, in the hills that enclosed our wooded valley. Jane was my closest girlfriend and I could talk with her about everything and of course, what happened to us in the past. We talked about Helen, who lived with us in the orphanage and who was also a very good girlfriend. Helen got very ill and after some time we got to know that she might will die. Nobody was allowed to go and speak to her and I was so sad, because I didn´t want to leave her. I couldn´t sleep all the nights until I had spoken to her. In Lowood we always had to keep strict rules, an everyone was afraid of Mr. Brocklehurst, the cruel master of the Lowood school, but Jane and I wanted to say goodbye to Helen forever. So Jane woke me up that night and we walked quietly trough the building in search of Miss Temple´s room. It was at the other end of the house, but Jane knew our way. We passed quickly by the room of the nurse, who was sitting up all night, but in this night she was sitting in a chair asleep. Jane and I went into Miss Temple´s room and we saw Helen lying on the bed. She had a very calm and pale face. She looked very bad and I really tried to keep back my tears, it was so horrible to see my girlfriend in this condition. Helen promised that she felt little pain and was happy to be leaving the world´s suffering behind and we knew that Helen will die this night. Suddenly we saw a shadow in the room of Miss Temple, it was so strange, because Jane, Helen and I weren´t afraid of it. We all had a good feeling and we could recognize that the shadow looked like a woman. The shadow get closer to Helen and touched her hand. Then Helen´s condition got better and better and she didn´t feel weak any more. It was unbelievable what happened that night, I thought I was part of a dream, but it was true. After some time Helen smelled the perfume of her mother and we all were sure that Helen´s death mother was here.
